Sesame Allergy Experts have estimated that sesame is becoming the 9th most common allergen behind dairy, eggs, fish, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat and soy. Sesame seeds are available in three colors: white, brown and black. Sesame appears in foods as seeds, oil or paste and is used mainly in baking and concealed in other foods. Sesame oil is used extensively in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries because it has many desirable properties: It is stable, neutral, nonirritating, not too viscous, and heat- resistant, and has nonsweating effects. There has been a report claiming that sesame oil is less antigenic than cottonseed or peanut oil. However, sesame oil is usually a crude oil, not highly refined, and therefore may contain significant amounts of sesame protein. It may therefore be a problem to those who are sensitive to sesame. Anaphylaxis has been described to both sesame seed and sesame oil. Ground, the seed is used as flour, or as butter, known as "tahini". It can also be fermented into "tempeh", or ground into a powder and mixed with a sweetener to make "halva." The seeds can also be sprouted and used in salads. A special process produces a clear white seed that is common on hamburger buns. Cross-reactivity between allergens in sesame and allergens in other foods, including hazelnut, rye, kiwi, poppy seed, peanut, black walnut, cashew, macadamia, and pistachio, has been reported. Sesame is used in Asian cuisines frequently, but Americans are more likely to see sesame seeds on top of hamburger buns, hot dog buns and/or breads. A visit to McDonald’s can be disastrous with a sesame allergy! Chinese cuisine also uses sesame seeds extensively. Eating out with a sesame allergy is very dangerous because of the risk of cross contamination. Sesame seeds can “jump” easily from one plate to another. Sesame can show up in products that aren’t ingested, but used in lotions and shampoos. Read the labels on these products also. Contact allergies can cause severe reactions also. Symptoms of sesame allergy include hives, swelling, hay fever, asthma, rash, and nasal congestion. Depending on the severity of their reaction, these symptoms can become quite debilitating. Many people who suffer from sesame allergy do not even realize they are suffering from a form of allergy for quite some time. This may because they aren’t able to make the connection between the symptoms and the consumption of sesame. Sesame is also similar in chemical structure to peanut allergens, and this leaves individuals who suffer from sesame allergy with an increased risk for developing peanut allergies as well. There also appears to be some correlation between individuals who suffer from sesame allergy and rye, kiwi, and various treenut allergens (including walnut, hazelnut, and macadamia) as well. Food allergies can pose some unique challenges to those who have them. Please help us raise awareness and funds for more research.

SesameFree.Org Awareness & Support Program Fund
Currently in Canada and Throughout Europe Sesame is declared as a potential LIFE THREATENING ingredient and is recognized as such on food labels and cosmetic products. However, in the US, not only is this labeling not required but they can even substitute the word Sesame for Spices. Please Show your support to change the labeling and sign this petition. You will get a square which can optionally hold your picture and a message of support. Studies have shown that an Allergen equivalent in size of the box shown can be enough to send a sensitive person into ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK. We ask that you share the image and link with others. With every donation, your ad will be featured on our site header and throughout our numerous social network apps. Funds raised here will go towards implementing allergy awareness and support programs.

Shaare Zedek Development Fund-The Wilf Children’s Hospital
Since our earliest days, Shaare Zedek has maintained a stellar reputation in serving the medical needs of children in the Jerusalem area. Today, with the construction of Shaare Zedek's Wilf Children’s Hospital, our commitment to this cherished community is taking one major step forward.
As a comprehensive facility, catering to the widest variety of conditions, diseases and injuries, the Wilf Children’s Hospital presents a new, brighter vision for pediatric medicine in Jerusalem.
Spread out over two floors totaling more than 60,000 square feet (5,575 square meters), the Hospital will include all the pediatric in-patient and out-patient departments that currently treat the tens of thousands of children who come to Shaare Zedek each year.
The first phase of the Wilf Children's Hospital to be completed was the new Glaubach Department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, which replaced the existing one. The new ER was designed in line with the high standards that characterize the Weinstock Department of Emergency Medicine so that we can ensure our continued reputation for quality and compassionate critical care, to be offered to adults and children alike, in settings that are both modern and attractive.
Intended to respond to the widest variety of pediatric emergency situations that occur in the Jerusalem area, the new ER includes triage and trauma units as well as more than twenty individual stations for treatment and observation. Spacious and aesthetically-calming waiting areas help children and parents alike to relax from the obvious anxieties associated with hospitalization. A dramatic upgrade from the hospital’s previous pediatric Emergency facilities, both in terms of size and scope, the new Pediatric Emergency Room of the Wilf Children’s Hospital ensures that when the need arises, Shaare Zedek is sure to be their for the children of Jerusalem.

The Tree of Life
In 2004 in connection with the Synagogue’s 53rd Annual Dinner honoring Lara & Gregory Rhine and Michele and Howard Wolf, The Synagogue commissioned the creation of a Tree of Life. The Tree, which is a magnificent eight foot freestanding tree that has become a focal point of our main lobby. Our members were afforded the opportunity to commemorate the birth of a child, a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, a graduation, an anniversary, or any other occasion honoring a loved one. The tree consists of trunks, roots, branches and leaves. Many of these items are still available for dedication.
